GIS Technology & Landscape Management
Most sites, particularly older sites, have no site plans or any inventory of landscape components (trees, square footage of service areas, controllers, etc.) Newer sites more frequently have plans available, but also rarely have a component inventory. Creating in property map and inventorying all components is one of the first steps in developing a long-term landscape management strategy. If you don't know what's there, how can it effectively be managed?
Property Mapping
Dendron uses Global Positions System (GPS) technology to identify component locations and ESRI's ArcGIS software, a Geographic Information System (GIS), to map properties. The use of GPS and GIS technologies is just beginning to revolutionize the way we all live and work. Site information is compiled in a geodatabase. This dramatically improves our ability to manage and monitor our clients landscape information.
We are now especially excited about our ability to extend this technology to our clients so that they too may utilize the technology. We are now able to provide our clients with free software to be able to query information or to create their own maps and reports, using any mapped or geodatabase information.
Base Map
This establishes property location, boundaries, buildings, parking areas, landscape areas, etc., to create a Base Map of the property.
Plant Inventory Map
The Plant Inventory Map fills in the blanks of the landscape areas of the Base Map. It establishes Service Area types of the landscape service areas (ground covers, shrubs, turf, etc.) the square footage of each, plant species, water, and other maintenance requirements .
Irrigation System Inventory
Irrigation system information can range for none to extensive, with none-to-little being the most common. This inventory creates a method to bring together all known system data (water meters, backflow devices, irrigation controller, valves, etc.) and maps it to create one comprehensive source that documents all existing conditions. The information is available to all who need it and is easy to updat and revise as new information become available.
Urban Forest Inventory
"Urban Forests" are all trees on a site, and if developed properly, can add significantly to the value of a property. This inventory identifies tree species, reviews the condition of each, and provides recommendations for their long-term management, as well as estimated costs.
Additional Maps
These are just a few of the categories that may be inventoried and mapped and information made available to those who need it. Depending on what components have been inventoried, maps can be produced to graphically display any inventoried item such as:
Parking space locations
Electrical master switches, light standards, meters, etc.
Water, gas, and sewer valve locations
